Maharashtra police have recorded 55.36 per cent conviction rate in 2021, a slight dip from 58.95 per cent in 2020, in Indian Penal Code (IPC) cases.
The Mira Bhayander Vasai Virar (MBVV) Police topped the tally among the Police Commissionerates while Ratnagiri police was first among the District police units in the State. The Nagpur City police ranked sixth with 51.63 per cent conviction rate.
Conviction rate is the number of cases per hundred in which the court has held the accused guilty and awarded punishment. In 1996, the conviction rate of Maharashtra was at 18.8 per cent and dropped to 11.6 per cent in 2006 and further dipped to 8.2 per cent in 2011. The improvement in the conviction rate was the impact of a series of measures launched by the State police during the tenure of Ex-DGP Sanjeev Dayal (2012 to 2015) and continued by his successors. A top rank police official attributed the conviction rate of over 50 per cent to various measures including proper investigation and filing of ‘watertight’ chargesheets, appointments of law officers, use of technology and forensic reports, monitoring of cases by Pairavi Officers in courts and the most important -- convincing the witnesses for proper statements in the courts.
According to statistics of Maharashtra Police, MBVV Commissionerate which was formed in 2020, has recorded the highest 89.63 per cent conviction rate in IPC cases while Amravati City police ranked second with 58.48 % conviction rate.
