The first ever initiative by Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) to hold Summer Internship Programme (SIP) evoked tremendous response from students as well as from institutes. Apart from top institutes of Maharashtra, the globally-recognised ones like Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indian Institute of Management (IIM), too, have shown willingness to join the project with an exchange offer. Meanwhile, Nagpur’s three institutes figured in the list of centres where MUHS students are expected to receive training. These institutes include, Health Education And Tele Consultation on Osteoporosis (HEATCO), run by noted Orthopedician Dr Sanjeev Chaudhari; Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) and National Cancer Institute (NCI).
The response shows that the second phase of the programme is likely to be more interesting as MUHS is mulling over including all the top institutes in the project in next phase. Sandeep Rathod, the Head of the Project at MUHS told ‘The Hitavada’, “We have put all the information on our website and we invited applications from institutes willing to act as centres and students interested in joining SIP. The response was tremendous. This is totally optional but still students showed willingness to join. We have to reject some institutes whose applications were received late.”
This project got promotion through MUHS website. Majority of people got impressed by the concept, approached MUHS on their own. Reputed institutes like IIT, IIM, too, got in touch with the University and agreed to teach students of MUHS. They came with an idea where they would send their students to University to get health education tips. MUHS got response from over 60 institutes all over India. It enrolled three institutes out of Maharashtra. They include 1. Health Informatics, Jaipur, Subrat University Meerat, LMCT University, Bhopal.
“We have left the decision of choosing institutes and course with students. We have prepared modules of around 50 courses. Students chose the courses and accordingly they get the allotment of the centres imparting those particular courses. Dr Chaudhari through HEATCO has done extensive work in the field of Osteoporosis. We have put an option of learning how to guide people on Osteoporosis, those who chose would get to learn it at HEATCO. Similarly those who want to go for Bio engineering or dental engineering they would be allotted VNIT,” explained Rathod.
As in National Education Policy (NEP), the thrust has been given on ‘Knowledge Beyond Classroom’, MUHS too is trying to do in that direction and this project is one of the part of those efforts.
“When the students go for internship they will get to learn environment in office, office culture. Suppose they visit VNIT go through CV of Dean or director there, it may motivate them to excel in their profession. They will learn the parameters for research, how the protocol is designed to do the research. Whenever they enter in final year, their vision is expected to become broad,” elaborated Rathod.
MUHS will be giving stipend of Rs 2,500 plus to students. It will have its Nodal Officer at every centre who will act as bridge between the students and centres. These Nodal Officers will monitor the training of students. “This is the wonderful project and we all are thankful to Lieutenant General Dr Madhuri Kanitkar, PVSM, AVSM Vice Chancellor who motivates us for any good work. When I put this project before her, she immediately supported it. I am sure that the project would surely give a required boost to the students,” Rathod put humbly.
