It is celebrated as Buddha Pournima as Gautam Buddha was enlightened, born and even finally attained nirvana, on this very same day
 
VAISHAKHI Pournima is a second full moon day of the Hindu new year started from Chaitra Shuddha Pratipada(Gudipadwa).Vaishakhi Pournima just comes after Narasimha Jayanti. The full moon days in the Hindu calendar are all markedas auspicious andassigned to various deities accordingly. It is also known as Bouddha Pournima, Kurma Pournima, Peepali Pournima,SatyaVinayakPournima, Vesak Purnima etc. The full moon of the month of Vaisakh (Sun in Aries) is considered extremely auspicious for spiritual purposes. It is celebrated as Buddha Pournima because Gautam Buddha was enlightened, born and even finally attaine dnirvana,on this very same day. The Vedic story assigned to this Pournima is that Lord Vishnu took his second avatar as the tortoise (Kurma) to allow the churning of the oceans.
 
Krishna is said to have advised his poor friend Sudama to undertake the Satya Vinayak faston this day to avert his poverty. The peepal tree is of great significance for this full moon as it is claimed that Lord Vishnure sides in it. Its was just a coincidence that Buddha was enlightened under a peepal tree on this same day. Performing Satya Narayan Puja on Vaishakha Pournima is believed to bringblessingsofNarayan,anavatar ofLord Vishnu.It is believed to bring health, wealth, and prosperity in life. Also, you get freedom from all sins and get good rewards. Moreover, Vaishakh Pournima is also known as Satya Vinayaka Pournima. As per Hindu untimely death by fasting on this day.
 
Yamraj is considered the god of death. To please Yamaraj fasting should be done on the day of Vaishakh Pournima and worship should be done according to the law. After worshipping, donating water-filled pots, axes, fans, pots, umbrellas, ghee, cantaloupe, cucumber, sugar, greens, rice, salt etc., beneficial things in summer, its favorable effect is seen in the next life. Dakshina given after worshipping gives peace to the mind andits effect remains for a long time. It is believed that by observing afast on the day of VaishakhPournima, Lord Vishnu as well asYamraj get a divine boon and aperson gets victory over death withthe help of the awakenednectar urn. On this day, Gautam Buddha delivered his first sermonin Sarnathon this day.
 
Also known asShakyamuni (Sage of the Shakyas), Tathagata, He is considered the‘Fully Awakened One’.Interestingly, this year, Buddhists shall observethe 2584 th birth anniversary of theenlightened one. However,since the traditional calendar is determined as per the Lunar cycle,the date varies annually in the Gregorian calendar.
