The scorching summer this year has shown 17.40 per cent drop in the water level at Totladoh dam, which is the biggest dam in Nagpur district and also the main water provider to the Nagpur city. At 58.24 per cent, the water level is much lower compared to last year’s 75.64 per cent at the end of the first week of May.
All districts of Vidarbha region are reeling under severe heat wave and April, this year, recorded the hottest month in last many decades as the maximum temperature of Chandrapur crossed the 46 degrees Celsius. According to sources in the water resources department, “Water levels in the dams are being closely monitored and if necessary, course correction would be taken to prioritise its release according to laid down norms — first drinking, second irrigation and last industries.”
The total water capacity of Totladoh dam is 1,166.93 Mcum which cater the domestic requirements of Nagpur district. Though the water storage is low in the dam, the people of Nagpur district are still getting water from it.
Other major dams of Nagpur district like Khindsi, Wadgaon and Nand have better water storage than last year. Khindsi dam has 45.74% water storage which is better than 28.41% in last year.
Wadgaon has 44.26% water storage which was 30.10% in last year; and Nand dam which had just 7.63% water stock last year, has better this year with 13.63% water level.
According to data from the water resources department, the water level at 3,267 dams in Maharashtra collectively stands at 42.02 per cent, which is higher than last year’s 41.98 per cent for the same period.
In terms of water level, Pune division has lowest water stock with just 34.87%. Last year, it was 36.95%. Nagpur division has the second lowest water stock with 38.78% and last year it was 44.32 %.
The Aurangabad division is placed on top with 51.20% collectively at 964 dams compared to last year’s 43.36 per cent. The Amravati division recorded a water level of 50.87 per cent at 446 dams, which is higher than last year’s 46.59 per cent. Whereas, Konkan division has 48.62 per cent water stock and Nashik division has 41.62 per cent stock.
