NEW DELHI,
THE parliamentary board, the top organisational body of the BJP, met here on Tuesday to deliberate on the party’s candidate for the presidential poll, hours after the Opposition named Yashwant Sinha as its joint nominee.
Besides Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari, BJP President J P Nadda and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, besides Modi, were part of the deliberations at the party Headquarters.
BJP sources described Draupadi Murmu as an able administrator and a compassionate leader of people. Her candidature has a special importance in the Government’s effort to reach the last frontier, sources said.
The decision about Draupadi Murmu was made at the meeting but no official word came out until the press conference e by party President Jagat Prasad Nadda hours later. Prior to the official announcement, the BJP circles witnessed much activity as Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu cut short his three-day tour of Hyderabad which he started on Monday, but rushed back to the capital on Tuesday..
A meeting of J.P. Nadda, Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh took earlier in the day to discuss the issue of the presidential nominee of the party. Then the trio called on Vice President Naidu, who was being considered as a likely nominee of the party. That gave a push to the possibility, but the party sources insisted that nothing special should be read from the meeting of the three leaders, who have been authorised to deal with the details of the presidential elections. They also have been authorised to discuss things with the Opposition as well.
June 29 is the last date for filing the nomination, and the election is slated for July 18.
Rajnath Singh and Nadda have also been authorised by the party to speak to various parties, including those from the Opposition, on the presidential poll.
The ruling combine has over 48 per cent vote share in the electoral college to pick the new President, and its candidate has a clear advantage over the Opposition.
