Consistent and good spell of rainfall in the catchment areas of the dams in Nagpur district have resulted in rise in collective stock of the dams. Keeping the water level in mind, the Water Resources Department, on Wednesday, started discharging surplus water in the dams by opening all the gates.
On Wednesday, dams including, Navegaon Khairy, Nand and Wadgaon were full to the brim and the administration had to open all gates of these dams. This could create flood-like situation in the nearby rivers and nullahs.
Gorewada Lake in Nagpur city also filled up on Wednesday. As a result, the civic body opened all gates of Gorewada dam. Meanwhile, citizens enjoyed the waterfall at the overflow of Ambazari lake on Wednesday. Amid rainy day, the overflow point of Ambazari attracted citizens who rushed to the spot with their friends and family to experience the overflow. Many of them captured photos and videos of the overflow point.
District Collector R Vimala, on Wednesday, addressed people of Nagpur, especially of rural areas warning them to be careful in view of red alert issued by Indian Meteorological Department for next couple of days and possibility of heavy rains in Nagpur district.
Kanhan river is also flowing at danger level, which also increased the water level of Nag, Pili and Pohra rivers of the city. Due to continuous rains in last few days, the water logging is also happening throughout the city.
There is possibility of water levels increasing in the days to come because of orange alert. The farmers have to go to their fields for sowing and other agricultural activities and hence they should understand climatic conditions and proceed with care, collector pointed out.
The administration has also appealed to the people not to cross the nullahs in spate as there are no barriers. There is possibility of tragedy and hence vehicle owners and drivers should avoid crossing the flooded water having strong current. So far 12 persons died of lightening and six due to heavy rains in the district.
A team of Tehsildar, Bloc Development Officer, Talathi and Gramsevak are closely monitoring the flood situation and responding immediately in case of emergency.
The rain for almost whole night on Tuesday caused water logging in Ramtek city. The rivers and nullahs are also overflowing there. The residential areas of Gurukul Nagar and Shiv Nagar in Ramtek experienced the water logging on Tuesday night.
Parsheoni tahsil is also experiencing flood like situation due to the opening of all gates of Navegaon Khairi on Wednesday.
Overflowing Kolar river is also increased the risk of flood in Kamptee and Saoner tahsils. On July 13, Nagpur district received an average of 91.90 mm rainfall in 12 hours. In last 24 hours, Saoner tahsil received the highest 145.80 mm rainfall whereas Ramtek (118.85 mm), Umred (133.57 mm), Bhiwapur (109.50 mm) and Kuhi (104.05 mm) also reported rainfall in three digit. Nagpur City (63.53 mm), Nagpur Rural (60.30 mm), Kamptee (73.13 mm), Hingna (81.90 mm), Katol (74.18 mm), Narkhed (51.13 mm), Kalmeshwar (95.33 mm), Parsheoni (99.70 mm) and Mauda (75.60 mm) also received heavy rains on Wednesday.
