At LEAST 12 people died and 15 were rescued after a bus full of passengers crashed into the railing of Sanjay Setu in Khalghat of Dhar district in Madhya Pradesh and fell into the Narmada river on Monday morning.
The bus got completely submerged in water. After the incident the people nearby and the boatmen in the river immediately approached the bus and started trying to rescue the passengers.
Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Dr Narottam Mishra said that the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus going from Indore to Pune fell into the Narmada river from Sanjay Setu in Khalghat.
The bus was pulled out using a crane. Due to rains, the water level in the Narmada is very high and some people are feared to be drowned, efforts are being made to search for them. The Madhya Pradesh Government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 10 lakh each by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
The Central Government will give Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund. A total compensation of Rs 16 lakh will be given to the next of kin of the deceased.
Former Maharashtra Minister and BJP MLA Girish Mahajan is also reaching Indore from Mumbai. He will go to Khalghat, the site of the incident.
The bus was registered with the Nagpur rural Regional Transport Office on June 12, 2012, and its certificate, which implies that the vehicle is roadworthy, was about to expire on July 27, 2022. Its Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate and insurance were valid.
The MSRTC informed that Chandrakant Eknath Patil was driving the bus and Prakash Shravan Chaudhary was the conductor. The MSRTC has also set up a helpline for citizens and they
can dial 022-23023940 to get information about the accident. By 5 pm, 7 bodies were sent after post-mortem, while 5 bodies are yet to be sent. The deceased were identified as:-
1) Chetan, son of Ram Gopal Jangid, resident of Nangal Kala Govindgarh, Jaipur in Rajasthan.
2) Jagannath (70), son of Hemraj Joshi, resident of Malhargarh, Udaipur in Rajasthan.
3) Prakash (40), son of Shravan Choudhary, resident of Sharda Colony Amalner, Jalgaon in Maharashtra.
4) Neebaji (60), son of Ananda Patil, resident of Piloda Amalner, Jalgaon in Maharashtra.
5) Kalpana (57), wife of Gulabrao Patil, resident of Sonavad Amalner, Jalgaon in Maharashtra.
6) Chandrakant (45), son of Eknath Patil, resident of Amalner, Jalgaon. (dead from 1 to 6 above were identified with Aadhaar card)
7) Arva (27), wife of Murtaza Bora, resident of Murtijapur, Akola in Maharashtra was recognised by the family.
8) Saifuddin, son of Abbas, resident Noorani Nagar was identified by an Indore family.
9) Raju, son of Tulsiram Mor, resident Rawatbhata Tehsil, Chittorgarh in Rajasthan was identified by his family.
10) Vishal (33), son of Satish Bahre, resident of Virdel district, Dhule in Maharashtra has been identified.
11) Avinash, son of Sanjay Pardesi, resident of Patan Sarai district Amalner in Maharashtra has been identified.
12) Rukmani Narayan Joshi (45), a resident of Bagore, Udaipur, Rajasthan was identified.
