RAJYA Sabha proceedings were on Wednesday adjourned for the day amid Opposition uproar over suspension of MPs and other issues. Leaders of many Opposition parties met Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday and demanded the suspension of 20 MPs be revoked, but Naidu made it clear that it can happen only after the MPs express regret over their “misconduct”. Sources said, 10 leaders of Opposition parties met Naidu in his Chamber and raised the issue and their demand for a discussion on price rise.
Stating that the number of suspended members was on the higher side, they suggested that the action may be revoked so as to have good attendance in the House. They suggested that a specific date may be indicated on which the issue of price rise could be discussed. Some felt that unconditional revocation of suspension would be appropriate.
Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi, Leader of the House Piyush Goyal and MoS (Parliamentary Affairs) Muraleedharan also joined the meeting.
In the Upper House, as soon as the proceedings commenced at 2 pm, Opposition members, mostly from the AAP, trooped to the Well of the House. Bhubaneswar Kalita, who was in the Chair, asked suspended AAP member Sanjay Singh to exit the House.
The Opposition members, however, kept on raising slogans. With protesting MPs refusing to budge, Kalita adjourned the proceedings for the day. Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned thrice during the pre-lunch period amid uproar by the Opposition members and Singh was suspended for the remainder of the week.
On Wednesday, the Upper House was adjourned soon after it met at 11 am and then twice during the Question Hour – first for 15 minutes and then till 2 pm.
