A MASKED thief burgled over Rs 5.82 lakh by breaking into a State Bank of India’s (SBI) Automated Teller Machine (ATM) at Firdos Chambers, Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Ramdaspeth, near Panchasheel Talkies in the small hours of Saturday. Around 10.30 am, SBI officials and executives of the security agency entrusted with handling cash refills at the ATM and monitoring CCTV footage, visited the spot after the sweeper informed them that the ATM cover was open. They found the lock of the ATM cover was open and 1,165 currency notes of Rs 500 denomination were missing from the cash dispenser trays.

Two other trays containing notes of Rs 200 and 100 denominations were intact. Staff from Sitabuldi Police led by Senior Inspector Atul Sabnis rushed to the spot after the bank officers informed them about the incident in the afternoon. Senior Police officials also visited the spot to supervise the probe. Fingerprint experts were summoned to trace the culprit. A senior police officer told ‘The Hitavada’ that there was no security guard at the ATM kiosk when the incident took place.

After procuring the footage of the CCTV cameras installed inside and outside the ATM kiosk, police found that the incident took place between 1 am and 2 am. In the footage, a masked man wearing gloves was seen entering the kiosk and opening the lock of the ATM cover with a key. Using some password, he opened the cash dispenser trays. After collecting the cash, the thief simply walked out. Sitabuldi Police registered a theft case and started the probe. “We are investigating the incident from all possible angles. Possibility of involvement of an insider cannot be ruled out,” he added.
