Heavy monsoon rains in the first half of August filled all major dams of Nagpur division. As a result, the flood-like situation is prevailing in Nagpur division. The Totladoh dam on Pench river, which meets the water requirement of Nagpur city, had 92.94% of water level as on Saturday. The dam has a total capacity of over 1016 million cubic metres (MCM).
Despite some relief from rains in last few days, the dams in the division have the water stock above the danger mark and more rains in the catchment area of the dams may cause flood-like situation.
In the year 2020 also, the water level of the dam had crossed 80% mark in the first week of July. This was because of heavy rains leading to the release of water from Chaurai dam on Madhya Pradesh side of the river to Maharashtra. This had led to flooding in
parts of Vidarbha. Same situation is prevailing this year also due to release of water from Chaurai dam.
In contrast, Gosikhurd dam, which is another major project in the division, had just 11.42% water stock on Saturday. The dam has a total capacity of over 740 MCM and the water level in the dam is just 84.55 MCM. Other dams like Itiadoh, Sirpur, Irai and Lower Wardha had the water stock above 75% as on Saturday.
Dams in Nagpur district like Kamptee Khairy, Nand, Wadgaon and Khindsi also had water level above 90% on Sunday. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rains in Vidarbha on August 23 and 24 and issued ‘Yellow Alert’ for Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli on both days.
In last 24 hours, Bramhapuri received the highest 27.2 mm rainfall followed by Washim 10.4 mm, Gondia 7 mm, Yavatmal 6 mm, Nagpur 4.4 mm, Buldhana 3 mm, Akola 2 mm and Wardha 1 mm.
The weather in entire Vidarbha on Sunday was pleasant due to cloudy weather. The maximum temperature all over Vidarbha was below 30 degrees Celsius except Akola (30.8 degrees Celsius) and Gadchiroli (30.0 degrees Celsius).
Like the maximum, the night temperature in the region was also below normal. Whereas the relative humidity in all districts of Vidarbha was above 75%.
