All the Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) in Maharashtra will get Rs 1.2 crore per Post Graduate (PG) seat. Government had asked Deans to submit the proposal with regard to it.
The procedure began when Devendra Fadnavis-led Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena was in power. It did not move forward even by an inch during the regime of Mahavikas Aaghadi. Some of its meetings were attended by the then Dean of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Dr Sajal Mitra at Delhi. Central Government was to share 60% of the total amount while State’s share was 40%. The issue of funding remained pending for the past more than two years. Now, the new Government has taken over and asked GMCs to submit the proposal.
Dr Sudhir Gupta, Dean, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) told ‘The Hitavada’, “In 2010 GMCH had 100 Post Graduate seats. In 2022, the number has gone up to 248. Government had asked us to submit the detail
proposal which I did. We have sought Rs 260 crore for the PG upgradation.” Similarly all the GMCs in Vidarbha including Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital, Akola, Yavatmal, Chandrapur and Gondia have sent proposal to State for the funds.
The upgradation includes advanced classrooms, increased library facilities, some equipment, quality infrastructure for hostels. With rising number though GMCH from time to time kept adding the facilities it went by snail’s pace because of lack of funds. Now Government has initiated the fund issue.
There is a rise of 692 additional PG seats in the kitty of GMCs in State. Once the GMCs have PG upgradation the quality of healthcare too would increase, this is what the Medical Education Department feels.
