AN earthquake shook the northern region of Chhattisgarh on Thursday. The earthquake tremors, with intensity 3.0, were felt at 11:57 am in parts of Surajpur, Surguja and Koriya districts under Surguja division.
However, no untoward was reported. In order to ensure the safety of the students in the schools, all government
and private schools in the Surajpur district were closed after the quake.
It needs to be mentioned here that, the earthquake tremors have struck district Koriya under Surguja division, thrice in the last 23 days, with consistent rise in intensity. This time, the epicenter of the tremor was located 10 km deep near Umeshwarpur between Surajpur and Koriya district. As per the National Centre of Seismology, Baikunthpur, under Koriya district headquarters felt the tremors at 11:57 am on Thursday. Very soon, people realised that it was all due to occurrence of earthquake, the tremors of which were also felt in Patna, Manpur and Girijapur area. In district Surajpur too, the earthquake tremors were felt in various areas including Dabri Para. If sources are to be believed, unlike previous incidents of earthquake, along with the tremors a strange sound was heard during the earthquake. Cracks also appeared in walls of some of the houses after the earthquake. It needs to be recalled here that in Surguja division earthquake tremors were felt thrice in the last 23 days. The magnitude of the earthquake that occurred on 11 July was 4.3, the magnitude of the earthquake occurred on July 29 was 4.6 while the magnitude of today’s earthquake was 3.0. However, there was no loss of life or property due to this earthquake. Nevertheless, people came out of their homes in panic. In district Surajpur, in compliance with the instructions of Collector Effat Ara, District Education Officer (DEO) Vinod Rai had announced a holiday in all the government and private schools of the district in view of the safety of the students in all the schools after feeling the tremors of the earthquake. Some parts of Surguja district also felt the earthquake tremors on Thursday morning. Confirming the incident, meteorologist HP Chandra from Raipur Met centre said that, the epicenter of the earthquake was around 10 km from Surajpur. “The magnitude of the earthquake was measured 3.0 on the Richter scale, as per the National Centre of Seismology,” said the Meteorologist.
