WITH increasing urbanisation, the cases of suicide have increased a lot and psychiatrists admit the fact. As per the data, one in every 100 deaths worldwide is the result of suicide. The information available with Nagpur’s Regional Mental Hospital revealed that the most important cause of suicide nowadays is economic hardships because of financial crunch. ‘The Hitavada’ talked to wellknown psychiatrists in Nagpur who have solution for the prevention of suicides, for which society too has to join hands. Dr Pravin Navkhare, Professor at Mental Hospital said, “Financial crunch is resulting in people to attempt suicide.
There is an alternative to suicide and aims to inspire confidence and light in all of us; that our actions, no matter how small or big, may provide hope to those who are struggling. Prevention of Suicide is often possible. Through action, one can make a difference to someone in their darkest moments - as a member of society, as a child, as a parents, as a friend/colleague or as a neighbour,” Dr Nikhil Pande, noted Psychiatrist put a valid point. Dr Abhishek Somani, Head, Department of Psychiatry at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) pointed out, “During coronavirus pandemic most families lost their earning hands, some have gone into bankruptcy so obviously financial crunch led many people to commit suicide. Most people have fell prey to addictions like liquor, ghutka etc which has damaged them a lot.” Dr Sushil Gawande, Professor at Department of Psychiatry at NKPSIMS and LMH who came up with several innovative ideas felt, “Depression and anxiety are important and common risk factors for suicide. People who carry suicidal thoughts may feel trapped or like a burden to their family, friends and society and thus feel like they are alone and there are no other options. By creating hope through action, we can signal to those experiencing suicidal thoughts that there is hope and that we care and want to support them.” Dr Sagar Chiddarwar, wellknown Psychiatrist elaborated the way of prevention of suicide, “There are three things. A. Reach in. B. Encouraging Understanding and C. Sharing experiences of people who survived suicide attempts. You can help give someone hope by showing that you care.
We may never know what we do that makes a difference. Simply making the time and space to listen to someone who is in crisis can help. Small talk can save lives and create a sense of connection and Hope in somebody who is struggling. Changing the narrative around Suicide through promotion of Hope can create a more compassionate society. The insights and stories of people with a lived experience of suicide can be extremely powerful in helping understand the suicide better.”
The mental health issues like depression, schizophrenia is the second reason for suicide while the attempt made by the impulsive children (For example parents refused to give mobile) is the third reason. Some people commit suicide due to impulsive thoughts while some plan it. Most people commit suicide with planning and they are the only one who come for treatment also to psychiatrist.” “Each and every suicide is devastating and has a profound impact on those around them. However, by raising awareness, reducing the stigma around suicide and encouraging well informed actions, we can reduce instances of suicide around the world.
