I’M AN original, baby boomer, born in 1957, who studied in a strict, disciplined school – Raja Muthiah High School, Chennai – for six years ending 1973. After 50 years, we recently had a Golden Jubilee Reunion function, under the theme “Friends Forever”. The gala function gave a chance to reconnect with old classmates and teachers. The hard truth is 50-year history. Far from those academic years comes our final report card.
Back to school
As I approached the grand venue of our reunion, I couldn't help but marvel at the kaleidoscope of colours, friendship and laughter that greeted, and a wave of nostalgia washed over me. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement and anticipation. It seemed like only yesterday that we were young and carefree, roaming our classrooms. Amidst the sea of grey hair and wrinkled faces, I spotted familiar smiles and hearty laughs of my old buddies, their faces painted with decades of life’s adventures. Time had weathered us, but the bond of friendship remained unwavering, and the spirits stood as young and exuberant as ever.
Before we settled in, the event kicked off with a hilarious icebreaker activity: “Guess who is who”, and the laughter echoed through the hall as some of us struggled to recognise each other in those awkward poses. It was heartening to see the galaxy of onctogenarian-teachers, who stamped their punctual presence.
The vibrant ambience mirrored the sheer diversity of personalities that made up our class (pun intended), and I knew we were in for an unforgettable day.
The heartfelt speeches of our distinguished teachers, recalling about our school days, reminded how they shaped our lives.
Some stories had us in stitches, while others left us with misty eyes. In his articulated speech, the headmaster reminded us to be mindful of our health. “Though you’re all my students, yet you’re senior citizens. Your mind enthuses you to do lot of things, beware your body may not extend the same support”. It was extremely fulfilling to receive souvenirs from him. We were blessed to feel the bliss.
Down memory lane
Nostalgia takes centre-stage in the context of a 50-year reunion. As classmates reconvene, they reminisce about youthful endeavours, aspirations, and the innocence of days gone by. The recollection serves to reinforce personal identity in the long journey.
Catching up with your alma mater is nostalgic, and the momentum can only be experienced. As time passes and lessons learnt in life, we discover ourselves. Reliving the good old days, the batch-mates shared their favourite memories from their time at school with immense candour and delight, and added insights into the evolution of society, technology, and human interactions.
In an era characterised by rapid societal change, reunion stands as a testament to the enduring value of tradition, fostering a sense of continuity.
In a moment of reflection, we gathered to honour the memory of our beloved teachers. We recalled their quirky teaching styles, the nicknames we christened them, and the life lessons they imparted. With humorous anecdotes and heartfelt words, the stories of the pranks we played, the mischiefs we got into, and the absurdities of our teenage years, we paid tribute to the mentors who had shaped our young minds and had left an indelible mark on our hearts.
It was as if time had rewound, and we were again basking in the camaraderie of friendship. The batch-mates echoed gratefulness for the education, skills and network that they gained during the school years, and how it helped succeed in our various fields. The group photo with all smiles and laughter filled the frame, capturing the essence of a day we would treasure forever. It was delightful to observe as the years melted away, and we found ourselves transported back to our youthful fervour. Though a tad slower and a bit more forgetful, our spirits were as lively as ever. Age did not dampen the enthusiasm; instead, we revelled in the wisdom and grace.
Class reunion, really classy!
As I returned from the reunion, I couldn’t help but reflect on the magic of the day. It wasn’t just a gathering of
student-turned-senior citizens; it was a celebration of life,
love, and friendship that surpassed time.
Life moves on. There can’t be another reunion after another 50 years. But what stops from having an annual meet from now on? Time waits for none. Remember, we leave the school, but the school never goes out of us. The meet can be best summed up in four words: #Nostalgia #Gratitude #Pride # Joy.
