Bhopal’s Sameer Hashmi has proved that where there is a will, there is a way. He participated in the world’s biggest race Iron Man Championship organised by Red Bull in Goa on October 8 along with 2,100 other athletes from 50 countries organised by the World Triathlon Association. Out of 2,100 athletes, only 1,465 athletes were able to complete this race. Sameer, the youngest athlete from Bhopal, completed this race in 16 hours 30 minutes and won the title of youngest Iron Man of Madhya Pradesh. In this event organised by the Red Bull, 2 kilometres swimming, 90 kilometres cycling and 21 kilometres running must be completed simultaneously. In this event, a total task of 113 kilometres has to be completed in 8 hours. First the participant has to swim 2 kilometres in the sea and after coming out of the water, complete 90 kilometres of cycling and finally the event ends with 21 kilometres of running. By completing this event together, the title of Iron Man is achieved.
Sameer did swimming, cycling and running in humid conditions of Goa. He maintained his courage and won the title of Iron Man by participating in the race. It was very challenging to compete in the race, Sameer said. But he did not lose courage and won after completing the championship. Sameer told that he was in Goa two days before the race. During practice in the sea, he was bitten by a fish on his leg due to which he felt dizziness and blurred vision. He was immediately admitted to the nearest hospital by his coach. During treatment he was given two drips and five injections.
After being admitted for 8 hours, the doctor refused to allow him to participate in the competition. But, Sameer did compete only because of his courage and determination. After winning the Iron Man title, his mentor Lieutenant Nasir Ali, coaches Zamran Hussain and Ejaz Khan have congratulated him and said that this is just the beginning, Sameer has to participate in more world championships in future. Nasir Ali told that earlier Sameer Hashmi had travelled from Ladakh to Pachmarhi and Statue of Unity in Gujarat on his solo cycle ride.
