Giving a jolt to various states where undergraduate MBBS counselling was conducted beyond cut-off date, National Medical Commission (NMC) has cleared that all MBBS admissions must be completed within September 30 of the concerned academic year and admissions beyond the cut-off date shall be considered invalid. Taking stand on the fact that 7 states are conducting undergraduate MBBS counselling beyond the cutoff date the national medical is commission and also issued a warning to the stakeholders including central authorities state authorities and medical colleges to strictly adhere to the counselling schedule fixed by the commission for the academic session 2023-24. The NMC has clearly mentioned that any counselling carried out beyond the prescribed schedule will be deemed invalid and the students admitted through such counselling will be discharged soon. The NMC UG Board also mentioned about the supreme courts order dated June 21, 2019 that merely because seats are lying vacant is no justifiable reason to extend the lasts date or grant admissions after the cut-off date.
 
The commission also referred to the regulations set by the MCI and noted that the MCI, Graduate Medical Education Regulations 1999 was amended vide MCI notification dated January 23, 2018, Provision Regulation 4(3) of the abovementioned amended notification categorically provides that no admission shall be granted after the last date. The NMC has directed all the stakeholders to strictly adhere to the counselling schedule fixed by the NMC for the academic session 2023 24 for UG MBBS course.
 
Simultaneously, it also warned medical colleges not to admit MBBS students under the economically weaker section EWS quota beyond the permitted seats. This notice was issued by NMC after taking note of the fact that several medical institutes have been admitting additional students for the MBBS course under the EWS quota and clarified that the commission will not permit any additional seats. The NMC mentioned that the government of India introduced 10% reservation to the EWS of the society through the 113 Constitutional amendment full stop this is also applicable for medical education.
