Undated: Two Government hospitals in Maharashtra’s Marathwada region witnessed a terrible death-dance that claimed lives of as many as 49 patients including 14 babies in a span of 2 days, sending shock waves across the country and forcing the State Government to announce appointment of a special committee to probe the ghastly development. Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital in Nanded saw 31 deaths on Sept 30 and Oct 1-2 while GMCH at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar recorded as many as 18 deaths in 24 hours spanning Oct 1 and 2.

AT LEAST 18 deaths were
recorded at the Government
Medical College and Hospital
(GMCH) here in Maharashtra’s
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
within 24 hours ending at 8 am
on Tuesday, an official said.
This comes against the backdrop of 24 deaths at the Dr
Shankarrao Chavan
Government Medical College
and Hospital in Nanded, also
in Marathwada, in 24 hours
between September 30 and
October 1 and seven more fatalities between October 1 and 2,
taking the tally to 31 in 48 hours,
according to officials.
“18 deaths were recorded at
the Government Medical
College and Hospital in
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
between 8 am on October 2
and 8 am on October 3,” the
hospital medical superintendent told PTI. Hesaidoutofthe18deaths
recorded at the GMCH, four
persons were brought dead.
“Among the 18, two
patients died due to heart
attack while two others were
suffering from pneumonia.
Another three deceased
patients were suffering from
renalfailureandanotherwith
liverfailure.Onepatientdied
due to the failure of liver and
kidney. One casualty each
was reported due to road
accident, poisoning, and
infection after appendix
burst,” he said.
The official said two preterm babiesdiedonthesixth
day of treatment (between
October 2 and 3) at the hospital. “They were pre-term
babies and weighed only
1,300gramseach,”headded.
The official said the facility was notrunning short on
life-saving drugs.
“Weareascertainingwhich
are the last-minute referrals
to the GMCH among these
cases (18 fatalities),” he
added. He said the facility
has the permission for 1,177
beds but anytime more than
1,600patientsremainadmitted.
Every patient death at Nanded Government
hospital will be probed: Minister Mushrif

Education Minister Hasan
Mushrif on Tuesday said the
death of a large number of
patients at a Government hospital in Nanded district will
be inquired to establish the
cause and promised things
will improve at the facility in
the next 15 days.
As many as 31 deaths,
including those of infants,
were recorded at the Dr
Shankarrao Chavan
Government Medical College
and Hospital in Nanded in
Central Maharashtra in 48
hours since September 30.
Talking to reporters in
Nanded, Mushrif said there
was no shortage of medicines
at the hospital and maintained that if the deaths have
occurred due to anyone’s negligence, action will be taken
against that person. “Every death case at
Nanded’s Government
Medical College and
Hospital will be investigated
individuallyby a committee.
There are shortcomings and
we will overcome them.
Change will be visible (atthe
facility) in the next 15 days,”
he said.
Mushrif and Nanded’s
Guardian Minister Girish
Mahajan addressed a press
conference in Nanded after
visiting the hospital.
Mushrif said the hospital
hasasanctionedbedstrength
of around 500, but nearly
1,000 patients were admitted in the facility and these
includedunderweightbabies
in critical condition.
The Medical Education
Minister said, “There was a
sudden rise in admission of
patients as there were holidaysand privatehealthfacilities were shut. The post of
hospital dean will be filled
immediately.”
