Maha Metro Nagpur has been recording an increase in monthly patronage for the past six months as 16 to 20 lakh
passengers used the new mode of public transportation. Accordingly, its revenue generation has also posted impressive growth of between Rs 3 to 4 crore every month.
As per the official data, the number of passengers increased consistently during June, July and August when Maha Metro Nagpur recorded footfall of 16,90,593, 17,30,188 and 19,95,200 respectively. However, in the month of September, the number marginally dropped to 17,90,066 but it again went up to 20,08,188 in the month of October.
Further, in the month of November, the number of passengers slipped to 16,23,304 due unfavourable climatic conditions and festive season.
Commenting on the numbers, Akhilesh Halve, Deputy General Manager – Corporate Communications in Maha Metro Nagpur, said, “over the period, Maha Metro Nagpur ridership graph has witnessed a steady growth.
As we intensify our efforts to provide last and first mile connectivity to our commuters, these figures would certainly go up. We urge citizens to use Metro services for not just speedy, safe and comfortable transportation, but also to contribute towards reducing carbon footprint,”.
Apart form this, Maha Metro Nagpur has seen about 50 per cent of its total fare box revenue generation through digital payments through various modes like Maha Card, UPI apparatus and through Maha Metro Nagpur App.
On average about 34 per cent payment is coming from through Maha Card every day, while Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and the Maha Metro App together are accounting for over 12 per cent of the total Fare Box Revenue.
Thus of the total Fare Box Revenue generated on any given day, the collective earnings through the various digital payment modes are more than 46 per cent.
Moreover, with the increasing awareness about digital payment, this figure is sure to go up and is certain to cross the coveted 50 per cent mark in the near future. In fact realising the need for promoting digital payment at all levels at a very early stage, Maha Metro Nagpur, in association with State Bank of India (SBI) introduced Maha Card in August 2019.
With cash transactions on the decline, the Metro commuters have shown their willingness to move to digital payment. Maha Metro Nagpur hopes that this trend would continue and number of commuters using this mode of payment would certainly go up in the future.
