Nagpur Railway Station is grappling with a pressing issue as citizens encounter major challenges due to the limited parking space available. The current parking area at the front of the station is inadequate to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles, leaving passengers and their relatives without viable parking options. According to a police official, the front-side parking space is exceptionally small which allows only a few cars to be accommodated at a time. The resulting space constraints make it difficult for other vehicles to find suitable parking which leaves citizens dropping off or picking up passengers in a dilemma. This is particularly problematic for those assisting senior citizen relatives, as there is insufficient space to drop them off or pick them up directly at the platform, he said. The situation exacerbates outside the railway station, where auto-rickshaws are haphazardly parked, further contributing to the congestion. A railway official highlighted that the problem intensifies during peak hours, specifically from 10 am to 12 noon and 4.30 pm to 7 pm as the timing coincides with the departure of several Nagpur-originating trains. This influx of passengers adds to the parking woes, as the limited space cannot accommodate the surge in vehicles during these time slots, he claimed.

A concerned citizen stressed the challenges faced by citizens, particularly when a woman is traveling with children and luggage. The lack of available parking space forces spouses to drop off their family members at the station’s entrance without the ability to accompany them to the platform. Current parking facilities include designated spaces for two-wheelers with passes near the RPF station and another area in front of the GRP station. However, the provision for four-wheelers is limited to a single parking slot near the historical steam engine, which is open for public viewing. This narrow space results in difficulties for citizens attempting to secure parking.

The congestion has reached a point in the evening hours where the line of cars extends as far as the State Bank of India ATM. The four-wheeler drop-off facility is strictly for brief stops, as any vehicle left unattended for a few minutes faces immediate fines from vigilant police officials. In response to these challenges, a retired railway official suggested the urgent need for a multi-storey parking structure at the railway station to alleviate the persistent space crunch issue. “The railway officials should actively address the day-to-day problems faced by citizens navigating the Nagpur Railway Station and enhance the overall experience for passengers and their families,” he stated.
