Smart City had claimed to develop a control and command centre with a cost of Rs 750 crore to monitor and control streetlights in the State capital. The street lights of the entire city would turn on and off from one centre. Any fault anywhere could have been detected, but this could not happen till now. The reality is that the roads of many areas of the city including Chuna Bhatti get immersed in darkness as the evening approaches. Streetlights in most parts of the city are not working properly or not working at all, according to citizens, but responsible officials are paying attention to malfunctioning streetlights. Out of about 45,000 street lights in the State capital, 15 per cent i.e. 16750 are faulty. Be it Char Imli, Arera Colony or Bagmugalia area. It has been three months since the street lights were closed and not switched on. Therefore, at least 140 areas of the capital become dark as soon as the evening falls.
The capital has been in darkness for many days. Be it Lime Kiln, Char Imli, Arera Colony or Bagmugalia area. Street lights were not operational in these places for three months. Therefore, most areas of the capital become dark as soon as the evening sets in. Anyway, 30 percent area of the city is in darkness. Because, there is no network of street lights here yet. During the election period, Smart City Cell had started a plan to install 50 new LED lights in all 85 wards of the city, but it was stopped midway. The work was completed by installing 10 lights in some wards and 15 lights in others. The situation is such that the entire area from lime kiln to Bagh Mughaliya etc. remains immersed in darkness as soon as the evening falls but no one has noticed this side yet.
The working of the Smart City, which is working towards pushing the capital into darkness, is completely responsible for this because it has influential officers who do not even bother to visit this side. More than 30 complaints about non-functioning of street lights are reaching the Municipal Corporation every day. Similar complaints come to the electricity company also. The electricity company says that it is not its job to switch on and off the street lights.
