A tale of political twists BJP

The assembly election results declared on Sunday in Chhattisgarh have defied the predictions and expectations that dominated the political topography. The Congress, despite being favored by poll pundits and early exit polls, faced an unexpected setback as the BJP triumphed after five years to form the government in the state. Just a few months ago, the BJP itself was uncertain about making a comeback, given its dismal performance in the 2018 elections. The party and its leadership seemed to lack the vigour needed for a revival. Observers noted an indifferent attitude within the party, even as efforts were made to sideline Dr. Raman Singh. Contrary to the Congress’ unprecedented victory in 2018, this time around, the party faced challenges. Overconfidence led Congress leaders to boldly claim they would secure 75 seats, surpassing their previous tally of 71. However, in the five years of Congress rule, corruption and scandals involving officials, businessmen and politicians tarnished the Government’s reputation and that of the chief minister.

The Congress Government began its tenure positively with announcements of schemes for farmers and loan waivers. However, the latter decision resulted in a cash crunch for development projects. The government also had to navigate the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, claiming to boost rural economies but facing growing resentment due to a lack of development initiatives and widespread corruption. The BJP and Congress both made enticing promises, including loan waivers. However, Chhattisgarh’s average farmers prioritized development over these attractive pledges. The people, more than being swayed by freebies, were disheartened by the state of affairs, corruption, and scams, particularly the Mahadev App and liquor-related issues, which played a pivotal role in the Congress Government’s defeat. Poor implementation of flagship schemes and bureaucratic hurdles added to the challenges faced by the Congress. Political analysts attribute the vote against the Congress to its decision to conduct a caste census, perceived by many as an attempt to further divide society. The deteriorating law and order situation, especially the concerns for women’s safety, highlighted by the BJP, also worked against the Congress. The flow of liquor into the interiors of the state and the PSC scam further damaged the Congress Government’s standing. While the BJP relied on Modi’s guarantee and his persona, the Congress grappled with internal strife over leadership, contributing to its poor performance.

The 2023 election echoed the dynamics of the 2003 elections, with the BJP making a comeback reminiscent of that earlier turnaround. Bhupesh attempted to lead the Congress similarly to how Ajit Jogi did in 2003, resulting in a replay of history. The Congress missed a crucial opportunity, and internal leadership conflicts were among the factors that contributed to their electoral setback. In the aftermath of the electoral debacle, it is evident that a profound anti-incumbency sentiment brewed against the Congress Government. However, what makes this political upheaval intriguing is the subtle nature of this undercurrent that eluded the surface. The outcome reflects a confluence of factors, primarily stemming from the inaccessibility of ministers and the bureaucratic machinery, creating a detrimental synergy that ultimately sealed the fate of the Congress party. Regions that were once staunch supporters of the Congress, instrumental in shaping the government, have now severed ties, precipitating the party’s downfall. This serves as a poignant lesson not only for the beleaguered Congress but also for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its leaders. The imperative takeaway is the crucial need for leaders to maintain accessibility to the public ignoring which they may succumb to the same electoral fate in the next five years. Congress’s misfortune should be a wake-up call for all political parties. It underlines the significance of remaining attuned to the pulse of the people and rejecting the allure of power syndrome. The electorate demands accountability, accessibility, and responsiveness — values that should be at the forefront of any political agenda.
