Nagpur city ranked fifth in crime rate in violent crime among the 19 metropolitan cities of India and first in the State last year, revealed the Crime in India 2022 report published by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). As per the NCRB, the police stations in Nagpur Police Commissionerate registered 12,889 cases under different Sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC), at the rate of 516 per lakh population of Nagpur. While Mumbai city recorded 69,289 IPC crimes with crime rate of 376.3, Pune recorded 11,074 IPC crimes with crime rate of 219.3. The statistics are a commentary on the law and order situation in the city, where frustration among the populace about lack of adequate opportunities seems to play a major role in youth taking to crime to further their dreams. The crime rate describes the number of crimes reported to law enforcement agencies per lakh population, said a retired police official.
A crime rate is calculated by dividing the number of reported crimes by the total population; the result is multiplied by one lakh. The NCRB considered the population of the 19 metropolitan cities as per the 2011 Census data. According to the report, the population of Nagpur in 2011 was 25 lakh. Most shocking fact is - After Patna (91.0), Delhi (69.7), Indore (60.4), and Jaipur (60.2) Nagpur is ranked fifth in the country based on the rate of violent crime reported by NCRB and again topped the list in Maharashtra. The rate of violent crime in Pune was 47.9 while 27.1 was recorded in Mumbai in the same period.
The violent crime cases are showing a downward trend in Nagpur. In 2021, the City police registered 1,409 violent crime cases while the city saw 1,228 and 1,361 cases in 2020 and 2019 respectively. In year 2022, the Nagpur city recorded 1,278 violent crime cases including severe body offences -- Murder, Attempt to murder, Dowry deaths, Foeticide, Infanticide, Culpable homicide not amounting to muder, Griveous hurts, In 2022, Nagpur reported 65 murders,102 attempt to murders, eight culpable homicide not amounting to murder, two infanticide, a foeticide, two dowry deaths, 259 griveous hurt, whopping 460 cases of kidnapping and abduction, 115 rape cases, 57 rioting, 167 robberies, eight dacoities, 31 cases of arson. The number of murder cases in Nagpur is lesser than Pune, which has recorded 105 murders, and Mumbai with 135. But murder rate of Nagpur (2.6) is much greater than Mumbai (0.7) and Pune (2.1) as population base of latter two cities is much bigger compared to city.
