A congenital anomaly of the spine was treated successfully by veteran neurosurgeon Professor Dr Pramod Giri, Director of Neuron Brain, Spine and Critical Care Centre, Nagpur, recently. The three-year-old girl suffering from split cord malformation was treated surgically and was given a new lease of life.
According to the available literature and scientific journals, this is the second only reported and resolved case of this type across the world. Dr Pramod Giri, who has given a lot many ‘first of its kind’ cases to neurosurgical literature, claimed that this particular case is of ‘Multilevel Diastometomyelia with tethered cord’ which has been reported only once before in the world.
“This baby girl came with complaints of difficulty in standing and walking, and also had loss of bowel and bladder control. She was having a posture bend, scoliosis and a lesion over back since birth,” Dr Giri recalled. After necessary tests, Dr Giri diagnosed the girl with a rare kind of split cord malformation known as Diastematomyelia and Tethered spinal cord syndrome (TSCS).
