A 70-year-old female elephant died near village Gersa under Dharamjaigarh forest division on Saturday. Learning the incident, a team of forest officials reached the spot and consigned the carcass to flames after the postmortem.
As per information, the female elephant along with six-year-old baby elephant was wandering near Gersa village. Suddenly, the female elephant got fainted and fell down on ground. On information, forest officials reached the spot and tried to give water to elephant but of no avail.
The female elephant died within few minutes. “The female elephant was not suffering from any ailment and only the age factor can be the reason behind its death”, said Dharamjaigarh Divisional Forest Officer Abhishek Jogawat adding that departmental officials were continuously tracking the elephant. According to DFO, it was risky to go near elephant since its baby was also present nearby. The team reached the spot after baby elephant left the spot. Secondly, the elephant was unable to eat any hard eatable item and was dependent on soft items. The excreta of elephant were also appearing to be indigestible and its teeth had also fallen down. In all, it was the age factor that led to death of elephant and death was natural. The elephant died in a revenue area.
