Continuing the protest against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as a Lok Sabha MP, party workers on Sunday performed Yagya and also staged sit-in at Malviya Square. Congress leaders said the Modi Government is working to end democracy in the country. Addressing the dharna, senior party leaders said disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha MP within 24 hours clearly shows that the Central Government led by BJP is crushing democratic values in the country. They said the BJP is afraid of Rahul Gandhi, hence it is engineering such acts.
It may be mentioned that a Court in Surat, Gujarat has recently convicted Rahul Gandhi and sent him to jail for two years over his Modi surname remark. However, he was granted bail and his sentence was suspended for 30 days to let him appeal the decision. With the action, Rahul Gandhi will not be able to contest elections for eight years (two years running with the sentence and six years under the Representation of the People Act, 1951).
Therefore, to protest against the incident, Congress leaders and members are staging protest across the country. They alleged that the Modi Government is depriving people of right to expression. They alleged that the union government is crushing the voice of people who are protesting against its wrongdoings. They said the Government is misusing investigative agencies. It is destroying democracy in the country. Those participated in the protest were MLA, Tarun Bhanot, MLA Vinay Saxena, Mayor Jagat Bahadur Singh, Bhagat Ram Singh, Sammati Saini, Narinder Singh Pandhe and others.
