The residents of Besa and Ghogali were shocked to see a part of the newly-constructed cement road develop severe cracks. The two-kilometre-long road is being built from Ghogli to Poddar School in Besa. A part of the road has been completed on which cracks have developed. The contract for this work has been given to Abhi Engineering for Rs 8.46 crore by Public Works Department (PWD). The construction of both lanes of the road from Poddar School to Shankarpur corner is complete, while the construction of the lane from Shankarpur corner to Ghogli village is on. However, even before the work could be completed, cracks are visible on this stretch. This has caused concern among the residents. According to Chandrashekhar Giri, the Executive Engineer of PWD, some of the cracks on the road's surface are shrinkage cracks, which may have developed due to use of excess water in the concrete.
The Public Works Department has assured the residents that it would get the cracks examined by Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) Nagpur. “If the VNIT report suggests that the cracks are severe, appropriate action will be taken against the contractor. Payment for the construction work will also be withheld until the VNIT report is available,” Giri said. PWD officials said they would ensure that the construction work was carried out with quality materials and appropriate measures were taken to prevent such incidents in future.
A local resident said that the safety and well-being of the residents must be the top priority, and measures must be taken to prevent accidents caused by poor construction work. The authorities must conduct a thorough check and take strict action against the contractor if the work is not completed as per the set standards, the resident said. For now, the development of severe cracks in the newly-constructed cement road was a cause for concern, and the authorities must take appropriate measures to ensure that such incidents do not occur in future, he said.
