In an another jolt to Cheetah Project, female ‘Daksha’ brought from South Africa has been killed by another cheetah in a fight at Kuno National Park on Tuesday. This is the third cheetah died in Kuno since the cats were brought from Namibia and South Africa.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) J S Chauhan confirmed the death of female cheetah. According to sources in the park, Daksha has died in a violent fight with Phinda adult male coalition, which included Vayu and Agni and also known as White Walkers. Out of 20 cheetahs brought to Kuno National Park, only 17 are alive. Sasha, a captive cheetah had died in March due to kidney ailment. Officials said that she had been suffering before she was brought to India. After witnessing sign of fatigue and weakness, she was under treatment but could not be saved. In April, second cheetah Uday was found dead inside the park.
After death of second cheetah Uday, officials deliberated on shifting a few cheetah in other area. Sources said that on Tuesday, Union Environment Ministry said that five cheetahs, including three female and two male, will be released from the acclimatisation camps into the free ranging conditions at the Kuno National Park in June. So far, four out of eight cheetahs brought from Namibia have been released from the fenced acclimation camps into free ranging conditions at Kuno.
