The proposed 2x660 MW coal based Supercritical Thermal Power Plant at Koradi is going to come-up against the six other thermal power plants of the State. In short State run Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (MSPGCL) or MahaGenco is planning to scrap six of its plants that have outlived its utility. This includes 2 thermal plants at Parli, 2 in Chandrapur, and one each at Koradi and Bhusawal. While MahaGenco claims that two new units at Koradi are categorised as expansion project, but Greens point out the folly that in such case then why all the plants are coming-up in Nagpur alone whereas they should have been set-up at sites where the old plants are being retired. This means, as against six thermal power plants, MahaGenco will run a single plant with the same electricity generation capacity which, environment activists claim, will double the pollution levels in Nagpur city and rural areas. Environment activists across Vidarbha have been opposing this proposed plant at Koradi as same would further deepen the already worsened environment crisis, especially the one relating to disposal of fly-ash.
Green activist Dinesh Naidu said, "Koradi already has a capacity of 2,190 MW thermal power plant which is always in news for violation of environment norms. With this proposed 1,320 MW project, the pollution level is going to be a matter of concern in the immediate future. Therefore, we should oppose this project as it will directly impact the environment of Nagpur city. Already temperatures in city have increased manifold, even during winter this year one got the feel of climate change. So with commissioning of new thermal power plant will adversely impact the new generation.
Due to expansion of Nagpur city in the past two decades, the Koradi thermal power plant can now be counted as one within the city limits. People of Nagpur are now directly influenced by the pollution generated by the Koradi thermal power plant. Not to mention that with rapid urbanisation, nearly a lakh people are now residing in several new residential localities that have sprang-up along side Koradi Road, like Zingabai Talki, Godhani, and even within Koradi the Mahadula and surrounding areas are now emerging suburbs.
Government of Maharashtra has already decleared in 2021 that no new thermal power plant will be installed in the State and MahaGenco bosses must be aware about it. They are also aware that it takes a long time and hefty paper work to get Environment Clearance for a new thermal power plant from the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC). Therefore they are calling this proposed Koradi 2x660 MW project as an expansion project,” claimed Naidu.
Talking about this expansion project, Sudhir Paliwal, Convenor, Vidarbha Environmental Action Group reasoned that if MahaGenco claims that the new super critical units are non polluting then why aren't they setting them at places from where their old units are being closed? Instead, MahaGenco is rushing to establishing a new unit of the same capacity at Koradi, and what is the logic behind it, he questioned further. In the existing thermal power plant, MahaGenco is closing its 200 MW unit at Koradi, and against it they will start 2x660 MW plant in the same premises. This new plant is definitely going to increase pollution tremendously,” said Paliwal.
