AIIMS, Nagpur doctors perform second kidney transplant in three days

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nagpur, witnessed two kidney transplants in three days. Two days ago, the doctors at AIIMS Nagpur performed live kidney transplant while on Thursday, a patient at the hospital received a kidney from a brain-dead patient. On May 3, Seema Surendra Waghmare a homemaker and a resident of Nara Vasti, Ward Number 1, Jaripatka, near Hanuman Mandir, and mother of Tanaya (12 years) and Janvi (10 years) woke up with severe headache. She was taken to CIIMS where her medical test reports showed brain haemorrhage. The doctors at CIIMS operated upon her. While she was recovering, again Seema Waghmare became critical after second stroke on May 6. Despite all treatment for 3 days, her condition deteriorated and the doctors declared her brain dead on May 9.
Her husband Surendra Waghmare was counselled by Dr Dinesh Kabra, Neurologist at CIIMS, and Veena Wathore, Counsellor of Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) for organ donation. The family -- husband- Surendra Madhukar Waghmare, nephew – Aditya Waghmare and Atul Mahurkar agreed to donate all possible organs including heart, lungs, pancreas, liver, kidneys, corneas. Accordingly ZTCC President Dr Sanjay Kolte, Secretary Dr Rahul Saxena, Coordinators Veena Wathore and Dinesh Mandape swung into action. Heart, lungs and pancreas alert was sent in ROTTO-West region that includes five states, but could not find suitable recipients. So, it was decided to donate liver, kidneys and pair of corneas. Liver was donated to a 59-year old woman patient at KIMS Kingsway Hospital. One kidney was given to a 51-year old man at AIIMS while the second one was sent for a 27-year old young man at CARE hospital while pair of corneas sent to Mahatme Eye Hospital.
Under the guidance of Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Prof. Dr M Hanumantha Rao and Medical Superintendent Dr Manish Shrigiriwar, the team of Critical care unit Dr Sucheta Bhowate Meshram, Dr Rajashree Khot, and Dr Varidh Katiyar took a decision declaring patient brain dead. ICU team - Dr Amrisha Raipure, Dr Hemangi, Dr Nilesh Nagdeve, OT Management team – Subhadra, Pooja, Rita, Lawrence, Rohan, Shankar, Sonia, Ashish Anita, Sandeep, Mayuri and Aniket. First Kidney: Retrieval and Transplant team from AIIMS, Nagpur, included Dr Sanjay Kolte Transplant surgeon, Dr Amol Bhawane and Dr Anand Chellapan, Nephrologist, Dr Chandrakant Munjewar and Dr Nilesh Nagdeve, Dr Amrusha Raipure and Anaesthesiologist Dr Bhuvaneswari B., Transplant Coordinator – Pritam Trivedi and Prachi Khaire.
Second Kidney: Retrieval and transplant teams from Care Hospital included, Dr Ashwinikumar Khandekar Nephrologist, Dr Ravi Deshmukh, Urologist, Dr Ritesh Satarday and Anaesthesiologist Dr Nitin Chopde, Transplant Coordinator- Shubhangi Pokale. Liver: Retrieval and Transplant teams of KIMS Kingsway Hospital included, Liver surgeon Dr Prakash Jain, Dr Sameer Patil, Dr Sheetal Awhad with ICU team of Dr Rajan Barokar, Dr Vijendra Belekar, Transplant coordinator- Shalini Patil. For Pair of Corneas, the team of doctors from Mahatme Eye bank included Dr Anukumari, Suraj and Pushparaj. Serology: Donor and Recipients Organs Cross match was done by Dr Shailendra Mundhada, Dhruv Pathology laboratory. AIIMS staff created the honour corridor and paid tributes to the donor and provided free ambulance service.
