One person was killed and several others were reported to be injured in the group clash that struck Akola on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Vilas Gaikwad, a resident of Harihar Peth. Police arrested 26 members of both communities involved in the clash. The situation in the sensitive areas of the city was tense but under control after the administration imposed Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code since Saturday night. Investigations were on till filing of the report.

Fake media messages and rumours brought the two communities to streets in old city areas of Pola Chowk, Harihar Peth and Jay Hind Chowk at around 11.15 pm on Saturday. A crowd of a community began pelting stones and bricks at people and shops. The mob also burnt stationary two vehicles, cars and some autos in these areas. Members of other community also took to streets. A house and a shop were set afire by anti-social elements. The groups had reached Gandhi Road till midnight. On receiving information, DSP Sandip Ghuge immediately took action. Old City police were deployed to bring the unruly mob resorting to violence under control. Some policemen also received injuries during stone-pelting. Police opened tear gas shells to disperse the mob. Akot File and Ramdas Peth Police were issued high alert to prevent spread of the group clash under their areas.

District administration immediately imposed Section 144 and ordered to seal all check posts. SRPF from Amravati, Washim and Wardha were also called in. Police forces were deployed at all the sensational squares and on main streets in Old City, Tajana Peth, Gandhi Road till Sunday morning. DSP Sandip Ghuge, Collector Nima Arora supervised the law and order measures and directed POs of Civil Lines, Khadan, Dabki Road to maintain peace in sensational areas. MLA Randhir Sawarkar told that Mah Dy Chief Minister and District Guardian Minister Devendra Fadnavis was briefed about the situation in the city. Dy CM and Home Minister has ordered a detailed probe has directed police administration to take proper steps to restore normalcy in the city. A meeting of peace committee was held in the morning in the sensational areas of old city. Collector Nima Arora and DSP Sandip Ghuge. MLAs Randhir Sawarkar, Gowardhan Sharma, MLC Vasant Khandelwal and members of the different Sections of the society were present in the meeting. The peace committee has appealed people to maintain harmony and the atmosphere of brotherhood in the city. DSP Sandip Ghuge has called upon people not to trust in any rumours. The entire city wore deserted look on Sunday. Commercial complexes, shops, vegetable markets, petrol pumps, grain markets remained closed. The situation was peaceful.
