Since the opening of ambitious Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Samruddhi Mahamarg (Nagpur-Shirdi) for traffic, it has been witnessing accidents almost daily. When the authorities concerned tried to identify the causes, they found that most accidents were taking place due to bursting of tyres of vehicles. Against this backdrop, the authorities have started conducting tyre-checking activity at Samruddhi Mahamarg. The activity will be held on a regular basis for which Tyre Checking Centre would operate near the Toll Plaza at Nagpur and Shirdi.

Road Transport Department and Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) in association with CEAT Ltd conducted the activity on Wednesday. While travelling on the Mahamarg it was necessary to know the quality of tyres of vehicles. Along with quality of tyres, the vehicle users should check whether they can match the speed of the vehicle. It means their quality, speed rating and condition are also important to drive safely on the expressway. At the centres the vehicles users are made aware of opting for nitrogen in tyres, proper air pressure and quality of tyres. The operators at the Centre at Mahamarg will check the valve pin of the tyre of vehicles plying on the expressway.

A tyre wear check machine has been installed at the centre. There are three machines installed at the centre bearing names as Step 1, Step 2, Step 3. Step 1 machine checks the speed ratings of the vehicle. Step 2 checks the wear and tear of the tyre. The machine indicates when a tyre needs replacement. When the tyre’s tread pattern surface is in level with the tread wear indicator, it is time to replace/change the tyre. Tread wear check should be performed every two to four months. However, it is necessary for the vehicle users to check tyres before undertaking a long journey. Step 3 shows the air pressure of the tyre which guides which is the correct inflation in the tyre. According to R T Gite, Ravindra Bhuyar, both RTO officers, a negative picture of Samruddhi Mahamarg should not be painted. There are several reasons connected because of which accidents took place. They both were confident that tyre checking centre would prevent the accidents at Samruddhi Mahamarg.
