In a shocking incident, a man from Dindori district had to carry his newborn son’s body in a bag for nearly 150 kms as he was denied an ambulance by the management of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College Hospital and he could not afford to pay for a private ambulance to take the newborn’s body back home.

The poor father claimed that he and his wife travelled in a bus with the body of their newborn son in a bag as they had no money to pay for a private ambulance. Earlier, he had requested the officers concerned of Medical Hospital to arrange an ambulance to which they bluntly refused. Giving details, Sunil Dhurve, a resident of Sahajpuri in Dindori district, said that his wife, Jamni Bai, had delivered their first child, a boy, at Government Seth Govinddas District Hospital on June 13, 2023.

The infant was weak at the time of birth and was referred to Medical Hospital on June 14, 2023. The baby died while undergoing treatment on June 15, 2023. As Dhurve had no money to pay for a private ambulance to take the body back to his village, he approached the hospital management but they overheard his request. Left with no other option, Dhurve put the body in a bag and travelled to his village in a local bus without letting anyone know, fearing that he would be de-boarded if the co-passengers or staff came to know about it. The shameful incident has put a question mark on the efficacy and claims of State Government’s health facilities.
