The vegetable prices are gradually increasing on account of lower supplies coming to the Mahatma Phule wholesale vegetable market. Normally it is seen in the months of April and May the local vegetable supplies get exhausted resulting in prices flaring up. “Lower supplies are putting tremendous pressure on prices resulting in vegetable prices rising,” said Ram Mahajan, Secretary of Mahatma Phule Sabji Bazaar Association and one of the leading vegetable wholesalers while speaking to The Hitavada. Mahajan further said that the prices of tomato and coriander have steeply increased in the market. The tomatoes are coming from Bangaluru while tomatoes are coming from far off places like Nanded, Pandharpur, Nashik and Chhindwara.
Apart from this, Mahajan said that the vegetable prices this year are significantly lower as compared to the previous year. This is due to unseasonal rains in April which helped to continue vegetable supplies throughout April. At present, about 70 to 80 tempos are coming to the market as compared to 120 to 140 tempos which were coming in the month of April. The number of tempos have declined to a large extent, he said.
In the wholesale market the vegetables are being quoted: Beans at Rs 50 per kg, Cauliflower at Rs 20 kg, Cabbage at Rs 12 kg, Lady Finger at Rs 40 kg, Tomato at Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kg, Brinjal at Rs 12 per kg, Shimla Mirch at Rs 50 per kg, Spinach at Rs 40 per kg, Methi at Rs 50 per kg, Cucumber at Rs 30 per kg, Pumkin at Rs 25 per kg, Jackfruit at Rs 40 per kg, Coriander at Rs 40 to Rs 60 per kg and Green Chilly at Rs 35 per kg, Lemon at Rs Rs 5 per piece and Carrot at Rs 30 per kg, he said.
