The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) was launched by the Government of India to provide connectivity to unconnected habitations as part of a poverty reduction strategy. The scheme’s phases are III which launched in the years 2000, 2013, and 2019 respectively. Additionally, in 2016, Road Connectivity Project for Left Wing Extremism Affected Areas (RCPLWEA) was launched for the construction/upgradation of strategically important roads, as a separate vertical under PMGSY to improve the road connectivity in 44 worst affected LWE districts and some adjoining districts in 9 States.
Madhya Pradesh has made remarkable progress under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), establishing itself as one of the top performers in the scheme. With an extensive network of roads, the State has constructed a staggering 88,715 km, which is the largest rural road network constructed under the scheme among all states. This achievement represents 98% of the ambitious target set at 90,493 km, showcasing the state’s determination to fulfill its commitments. The State’s commitment to improving infrastructure and accessibility is further evident by its construction of 1130 Long Span Bridges (LSB), enabling better connectivity to remote areas. Alongside this, in connecting habitations, Madhya Pradesh has ensured that 19,121 communities benefit from improved road access, significantly impacting the lives of its rural population.
The successful implementation of the PMGSY in Madhya Pradesh reflects the state government’s dedication to rural development and its emphasis on inclusive growth. Through its impressive performance under PMGSY, Madhya Pradesh has set an exemplary standard for other states, emphasising the importance of infrastructure development in fostering socio-economic progress and ensuring that no region is left behind in the journey towards a more prosperous and connected India.
