The plan of development of airport at Gadchiroli was pending for the last 3 years. After Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party took up the reins in Maharashtra last year, the project started gaining momentum. In a recent development, Airport Authority of India (AAI) has accepted the proposal of inspecting the site. It is considered as a major step in setting up airport in the tribal district. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, during his recent visit to Gadchiroli, vowed to make the district economically prosperous and self-reliant. He had asked the officials to revive the old plan of Gadchiroli airport. Accordingly, Divisional Commissioner Vijayalaxmi Bidari took up the work. A proposal was sent to Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) on July 20, which was then sent to AAI, which responded on August 4, agreeing to inspect the site.

Sharing the good news with ‘The Hitavada’ Bidari explained, “AAI will check pre-feasibility of the project, and conduct the Obstacle Limitation Surfaces (OLS) survey.” OLS means the airspace around aerodromes to be maintained free from obstacles before permitting the intended aeroplane operations to be conducted safely. This survey is also done to prevent future obstacles. “We need 213 hectare land, which we have identified, covering some part of three villages in the district. Once AAI conducts surveys and gives approval, further process would begin including land acquisition,” Bidari made it clear. With huge potential and resources, Gadchiroli will soon emerge as the leading district both in terms of industrial growth and agriculture sector, this is what Government feels. There are a lot of mines of copper and limestone too. Bidari pointed out, “We are expecting lot of investments to come in Gadchiroli. For industrial growth any place will need a good airport. With this thought Government is giving more stress on the project.”

There is one more major benefit of the airport related to safety and security. The district always witnesses fierce fighting between security forces with naxals. When any jawan is injured, the administration finds it difficult to bring the injured jawan to Nagpur for treatment. Once the airport is ready, such jawans can be airlifted for Nagpur to get faster treatment to them. The facility can be used for common public if needed, Bidari made it clear.
