Divide among corporators over naming of P&T gate no 2 after Lord Parshuram

 

 

 

The proposal to name P&T gate number 2 square after Lord Parshuram has sparked a controversy, with 22 out of 79 corporators protesting against the move. The corporators, who are opposing the decision of the Mayor-in-Council (MCI), claim that when the demand was made to rename Gulaua Square after Lord Parshuram, it was ignored. The public representatives, led by Corporator Jitu Katare submitted a memorandum to Mayor Jagat Bahadur Singh and Municipal Commissioner Rinku Vij, demanding that Gulaua Square be named after Lord Parshuram. As many as 3 Congress Corporators are also among those opposing the decision of the MCI. It is learnt that most of the MCI members want Gulaua Square to be named after Lord Parshuram and are also supporting the demand of these 22 Corporators, but are not coming out publicly due to party norms.

 

It may be noted that Mayor Singh had first announced the naming of Ranital Square after Lord Parshuram, but it could not be done. Thereafter, the demand to name Gulaua Square has been gaining momentum. But, recently the M-i-C reported decided to name P&T square after the Lord. The controversy over the naming of the square has led to a heated debate, with some supporting the move and others opposing it, citing various reasons. The matter is now in the hands of the MCI, which will have to take a decision after considering all aspects.
