Deepak Patel, a porter at the Korba Railway station, has once again proven his mettle in the world of sports by clinching the gold medal at the Federation Cup National Powerlifting Championship in Siliguri, West Bengal. This significant win marks his fourth national gold, further solidifying his standing as one of the premier talents in powerlifting.

 

Organised by the Darjeeling district Powerlifting Association under the patronage of World Powerlifting India, the Federation Cup saw Deepak showcase his formidable strength. He secured the championship by lifting a staggering total of 382.5 kilograms. This weight consisted of a 175 kgs deadlift, an 87.5 kgs bench press, and a 120 kgs squat. The organising president, Jitendra Sareen, alongside notable figures such as Ishan Ranjan Banerjee, president of World Powerlifting India, Mukula Bhattacharya, working president of Bangla Powerlifting Association, and Ashoka Chakraborty, general secretary of Darjeeling district Powerlifting Association, lauded Deepak’s outstanding performance. Deepak’s winning streak is no fleeting phenomenon.

 

He had previously bagged gold medals in National Powerlifting Championships held in Guwahati, Howrah, and Durg. Furthermore, he had secured top spots in 12 state-level competitions across Chhattisgarh. Yet, amidst his athletic commitments, Deepak continues to prioritise education. He recently appeared for his class 10th exams, demonstrating that knowledge is as critical as physical fitness. Deepak’s dreams extend beyond the powerlifting stage. With hopes of securing a government job in the Railways via the sports quota, he aspires to improve the living conditions for his aging mother, wife, and three children.
