National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India, has directed Chief Wildlife Wardens of all Tiger Ranges in the country to replace all old vehicles being used for safari purpose by private operators. Also, similar old departmental vehicles are to be phased out immediately. The decision was made by the Environment Minister during the 23rd meeting of NTCA at IIFM, Bhopal recently. To facilitate uniform and energy-efficient vehicles for safari purpose, NTCA is co-ordinating with Maruti Suzuki to facilitate procuring of the petrol version of the newly launched Jimny vehicle modified to suit the need of safari purpose.

Currently, most of the states are using Maruti Gypsy for jungle safari. However, Maruti has discontinued its Gypsy model and launched Jimny. NTCA has made this development on the context of the new scrapping policy of the Government of India. The Authority has also asked states to send its requirement of the modified vehicle and the number of vehicles required.

This vehicle is also 4x4 like the outgoing Gypsy. It is a specially designed all-terrain vehicle that aims to enhance the safari experience for tourists. Unlike the traditional Gypsy, Jimny provides a more comfortable and secure ride, equipped with modern amenities and big space for better views. However, instructions have also been given by NTCA to the concerned company to make partial changes in Jimny. Only after this can Jimmy be operated in the Tiger Reserves.
