Nagpur Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr Abhijit Chaudhari, on Monday, asked the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to take stern action against Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), Hingna, for its inaction in curbing release of industrial effluent in Ambazari lake which is causing growth of Eichhornia weeds in the water body. Dr Chaudhari chaired a meeting at his office in Civil Lines to review the condition of Ambazari lake. In the meeting Anchal Goyal, Additional Municipal Commissioner; Vijay Deshmukh, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Wadi Municipal Council; Dr Shweta Banerjee, Superintending Engineer, NMC; Dr Gajendra Mahalle, Deputy Municipal Commissioner; Prakash Warade, Assistant Commissioner; and Sandeep Lokhande, Assistant Commissioner were present.
However, the Administrator instructed the officials concerned to issue show-cause notices to MPCB and MIDC for skipping the meeting. Deshmukh informed the meeting that there a nullah in Wadi Municipal Council flows into Ambazari lake. Construction of 11 MLD sewage treatment plant is on over the nullah. The State Government has sanctioned Rs 105 crore for the STP. After its construction, the STP will help to stop the flow of sewage into the lake, said the CEO of Wadi Municipal Council. Municipal Commissioner said that there should be a way out to stop the flow of sewage in the water body till the STP becomes functional.
Dr Chaudhari advised Wadi Municipal Council to take expert advise of CSIR-NEERI to temporarily stop the releasing of sewage water in the water body. The flooding of Eichhornia weeds in Ambazari lake has become a major concern for the civic body. NMC has started removing of the weeds from the water body with the help of boats. Even after the corrective measures, growth of Eichhornia weed in water body continues affecting the aquatic life of the lake.
