The scare of Lumpy Virus is back in the State capital. With cowherds expressing concern over rapidly spreading skin disease among the animals. In last 7 days, a total of 32 bovines have been found infected by the disease from different areas of the city. Of these, 11 cows were found wandering on road. Those who have now been caught and kept in an animal shelter of Jahangirabad, while rest of the cattle are with the cattle owners. Infected cattle have been asked to be kept away from healthy animals. So that the infection does not spread. Condition of two to three infected cows is reported to be critical.
 
Veterinary Department officials say that infected animals are kept in quarantine for seven days. After this they will recover. All infected cattle have been found from urban areas. Among these, there are both types of stray animals roaming on streets and domesticated cattle. Deputy Director of Veterinary Services Dr Ajay Ramteke said that all 32 cattle are from urban areas. Infected cows have been traced from many places including Gandhi Nagar, Chhola, Karond, Mata Mandir, Hathaikheda, Bhadbhada. Not a single case has been found yet in the rural areas of the district or in Berasia. Blood samples of these infected animals have been sent to the lab. Sample report comes in 2 to 3 days. Animals whose report is positive are quarantined and the treatment has been started. Lumpy virus spreads through animal-to-animal contact.
 
This is the reason why infected and healthy cattle are kept separate. Lumpy infected animals show a variety of symptoms. Animals suffering from this virus get fever and they become lethargic. There is swelling in the feet. Saliva continuously comes out of the mouth. Red lumps form in the body which starts appearing all over the body. The animals’ milk production either reduces or they stop giving milk. This disease spreads from one fly, mosquito to another animal, but this disease does not spread to humans.
