Haphazard parking, unrelenting rickshaws, non-stop chaos at Nagpur Railway Station’s Santra Market gate
By Dheeraj Fartode
The Eastern gate of Nagpur Railway Station, also known as the Santra Market gate, has become synonymous with
daily traffic chaos, leaving commuters frustrated as the city authorities fail to address the issue. The situation exacerbates when a traveller, arriving from the train, attempts to exit through the Eastern gate, only to be met with severe traffic jams. A chaotic scene is be visible as a multitude of auto-rickshaws, haphazardly parked despite designated areas, obstruct the smooth flow of motor vehicles through the road. Despite demarcated spaces for auto-rickshaws, three-wheeler drivers brazenly park their vehicles along the road and occupy two lanes, which lead to congesting the road and causing traffic disruptions.
The congestion is most visible during peak hours, specifically at 8 am, 12 noon, 5 pm, and around 9 pm. The situation has worsened following the construction of the Metro Station, where a divider was erected on the road, only to be broken at the entrance gates of the railway station. Auto-rickshaw drivers are taking advantage of the gap in the dividers and park their vehicles in the gap.
This further complicates matters as the three-wheelers prevent smooth u-turns and result in traffic queues extending up to the T-point. Adding to the frustration is the apparent absence of traffic department personnel during morning hours which exacerbate the chaos at the railway station’s exit gate. The traffic chaos has left the commuters to navigate through the mess without adequate support.
Garbage near the exit gate
The area surrounding the exit gate is marred by another problem- garbage. Adjacent to the exit gate lies an open space of railway land strewn with garbage, which creates a dismal impression of the city for newcomers. The display of heaps of garbage puts the city to shame.
