A looming crisis of a prolonged blackout exceeding 12 hours is threatening the cities of Bhilai and Durg, along with disrupting train operations throughout the region. The cause is attributed to unchecked thefts at the 220/132 KV power substation in Bhilai-3. Officials from the power company have raised concerns about the inaction on the part of police and relevant agencies, while police officers claim ignorance regarding any complaints related to the grave issue. According to social workers and public representatives, these thefts are a direct result of an unchecked network of scrap dealers operating in the region. The situation has become increasingly alarming due to continued theft attempts at the 220/132 KV power substation located in Bijali Nagar, Bhilai-3.

 

The substation, which has been in operation for over six decades, plays a critical role in supplying power to the twin cities of Bhilai and Durg, as well as parts of Raipur city and facilitating train operations across the region through traction lines from 132/33 KV substations. It also provides power to 132 KV substations in Ruabandha, Pulgaon, Gurur, Rasmada, Kurud, and other areas. Akhilesh Gajpal, Executive Engineer of the 220/132 KV power substation of Chhattisgarh State Power Transmission Company Limited (CSPTCL), expressed serious concerns over the situation. He reported one theft and over four attempted thefts at the substation, highlighting the lack of action by concerned agencies despite detailed complaints filed with the police station, SSP, and district collector’s offices. No FIR has been registered at the concerned police station to date, even after complaints of cognizable offenses. Gajpal explained that unidentified thieves are targeting signal panel cables at the substation, which could result in a loss of signal if the lines to 132/33 KV substations trip.

 

While this may not cause major property damage, restoring power supply could be a challenging task, potentially leading to prolonged power cuts in the region and disrupting train operations. In response to the critical situation, actions have been initiated at the substation level to prevent further thefts and attempts. Measures include reinforcing fencing and increasing security in the affected area. Ambarsingh Bhardwaj, SHO of Purani Bhilai Police Station, stated his commitment to investigate the matter thoroughly and take appropriate action to address the thefts. Javed Khan, Spokesperson for the District Congress Committee, highlighted the presence of a large network of illegal scrap dealers operating with alleged collusion from various authorities. He called for proactive measures from the new government to address the issue effectively.
