A new revolution is taking birth in Bastar with the first Bastar Olympics. It is a matter of great happiness for me that the dream of Bastar Olympics has come true

In his latest Mann Ki Baat address on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about the transformative impact of the Bastar Olympics, describing it as a unique initiative that reflects the evolving spirit of India and the enthusiasm of its youth. “Do you know that a unique Olympic has started in Bastar?” the Prime Minister asked. He praised the event, saying, “A new revolution is taking birth in Bastar with the first Bastar Olympics. It is a matter of great happiness for me that the dream of Bastar Olympics has come true.” Significantly, the Bastar Olympics are being held in a region previously plagued by Maoist violence.

The mascot of the games, the ‘Forest Buffalo’ and ‘Pahadi Maina,’ symbolize the rich cultural heritage of Bastar. The event’s guiding mantra, ‘Karsay Ta Bastar, Barsay Ta Bastar’ (Bastar will play, Bastar will win), resonates with the local community’s aspirations. This maiden edition of the Bastar Olympics has witnessed enthusiastic participation, with 1.65 lakh players from seven districts competing across sports such as athletics, archery, badminton, football, hockey, weightlifting, karate, kabaddi, kho-kho, and volleyball. Highlighting inspiring stories from the event, PM Modi mentioned Kari Kashyap, an archer from a small village who won a silver medal, crediting the games for providing her with both a platform and new opportunities. Another standout performer, Payal Kawasi from Sukma, won gold in the javelin throw and emphasized the importance of discipline and hard work. Punem Sanna from Sukma, who once lived under the shadow of Naxal influence, is now winning medals in wheelchair racing, demonstrating incredible resilience and determination.

Ranju Sori, an archer from Kodagaon, has been named ‘Bastar Youth Icon,’ reflecting the event’s success in spotlighting hidden talent. PM Modi noted that the Bastar Olympics are more than just a sports event; they are a confluence of development and sports, paving the way for a new India. He urged citizens to support similar initiatives, share stories of local sports talents using the hashtag Khelega Bharat Jeetega Bharat, and give opportunities to emerging athletes. “Sports not only foster physical fitness but also connect society with a spirit of sportsmanship. So, let us play more and bloom together,” the Prime Minister stated.
