Thousands take holy dip on Mauni Amavasya

On the pious occasion of Mauni Amavasya, thousands of devotees thronged the banks of river Narmada River, on Friday. They took holy dip in the holy river and performed religious rituals. From early morning, the atmosphere was charged with the spiritual fervor of the people. Thousands flocked to various ghats along the Narmada such as Gaurighat, Tilwaraghat and Jilharighat to perform rituals, offer prayers and make charity.
 
According to the priests, the day is also known as Maghi Amavasya due to its occurrence in the Magh month. Mauni Amavasya holds a special significance for observing the vow of silence. Worshiping Lord Vishnu and taking a holy dip in river Narmada on the day is believed to bring special blessings and merits. It is also customary to circumambulate the Peepal tree 108 times. According to tradition, the Peepal tree is considered the abode of 36 crore deities. Observing prayers on Amavasya fulfills all wishes. On Friday, a large number of devotees reached the sacred banks of river Narmada for a bath on Amavasya. Along with religious rituals, fairs were also organised along the banks of river Narmada in Gaurighat, Bhedaghat, Lamhetaghat, Tilwara Ghat etc.
