Gondwana varsity to confer honorary DLitts on Fadnavis, Mungantiwar

 

 

 

 

 

 

Gondwana University has decided to confer honorary D Litts on State’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis as well as State Forest, Cultural Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar. The decision was taken in a special meeting of the Senate held in the University, on Wednesday, under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Dr Prashant Bokare. In accordance with the provisions of section 129 (1) (2) of the Maharashtra Public University Act 2016, Dr Bokare had proposed names of Fadnavis and Mungantiwar to the Chancellor of the Universities for conferring honorary degrees of the University. Both names were approved by Governor Ramesh Bais, informed the University

office in a press release issued here on Wednesday evening.

 

Under Section 129(1) of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act 2016, there is a provision that the Vice-Chancellor may, with the approval of the Chancellor, grant an honorary degree to any person, without compelling him to appear for any test or examination or evaluation of examination, merely on account of his meritorious standing and public service. It is also stated that the management council of a university may consider and recommend to the senate the conferment of such honorary degree or other academic distinction on such person on their grounds of merit alone. Accordingly, in the Management Council meeting held on December 4, 2023, the names of Fadnavis and Mungantiwar were recommended to the Senate. The matter was then placed before the meeting of the Senate held on February 14 to obtain its consent. The matter was approved unanimously, said the press release. So now, both the Cabinet Ministers will be awarded D Litt degrees, it has been informed.
