Speeding on part of a woman -- belonging to a reputed business family of the city -- returning after late a night party, cut short the lives of two youths who were knocked dead by her car on Ram Jhula. The mishap, which occurred in the wee hours of Sunday, once again brought to the fore the perils of rash and negligent driving on city roads. As per police, the woman behind the wheel was accompanied by her female friend. The dash of the speeding Mercedes was so powerful that one of the youths died on spot while another was left battling serious injuries. The injured youth later succumbed to his injuries during the course of treatment at a private hospital on Sunday evening. The horrifying accident has left the local residents in shock. The deceased have been identified as Mohd Hussain Gulam Mustafa (34), a resident of Naal Sahab Square, Mominpura, and his friend Mohd Atif Mohd Jiya (32), of Jafar Nagar, Awasthi Square. Mohd Hussain was killed on the spot while Mohd Atif died during treatment.

According to police, the duo was riding on an Activa scooter (MH-37/Q-2948) when the speeding Mercedes (MH-49/AS-6111), driven by Ritika alias Ritu Dinesh Malu (39), a resident of Deshpande Layout, rammed into the two-wheeler from behind at around 1.30 am. The impact of the collision was so severe that the Mercedes came to a standstill at the accident site. Onlookers rushed to the aid of the injured duo, and rushed them to Mayo Hospital. Ritika Malu and her companion Madhuri Shishir Sarda (37), a resident of Wardhaman Nagar, had attended a party at CP Club and the two were returning home late at night when the accident occurred. It was reported that Ritika lost control of the steering while exiting through Ram Jhula and the vehicle mowed down the two youths. Immediately after the accident, both Ritika and Madhuri fled the scene as they sensed growing anger among the onlookers.

However, the two women later surrendered at Tehsil Police Station and admitted their involvement in the accident. It was revealed that the front side of the Mercedes sustained substantial damaged in aftermath of the collision. A police official stated that both victims on the two-wheeler were not wearing helmets. The police arrested Ritika Malu on charges of causing death by negligence, causing hurt by endangering an act, and rash driving. Her blood sample was sent for forensic analysis. A case has been registered under Sections 279, 338, and 304 (a) of the Indian Penal Code, along with Section 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act, by Tehsil police. Both the women were also granted bail at the police station by Sunday late night.
