MMRCL to raze Freedom Park portion for Tekdi subway

 

 

 

 

 

 

Freedom Park built by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) at Zero Mile Metro station is going to be demolished to pave way for a subway planned for easing congestion on the Tekdi Road stretch. A primary drawing indicated that nearly 25 per cent of the existing portion of the park is going to face demolition. The staircase and other adjoining part of the park would need to be bulldozed as the subway connecting Tekdi Road with Science College road gathers pace. Even otherwise the Freedom Park at Old Morris College Square was closed for citizens since long. It was only opened on Thursday evening following media queries. The green space was frequented by people for morning and evening walks. However, during afternoon and evening hours, the gathering of youngsters was a nuisance and nothing could be done about it.

 

The trouble by youngsters whose wayward behaviour put off the people who wanted to spend some quality time amidst the cacophony of blaring horns at the busy square. The subway at Zero Mile station is also going to see removal of amphitheatre at the park. So, in short, the park would be off for citizens as the work for subway gathers pace in days to come. Citizens already were angry after seeing board hanging at the gate of park informing about its closure. Confirming the development, Akhilesh Halve, Deputy General Manager, Corporate Communications, MMRCL, said that as per primary plans 25 per cent of the existing park area is going to be diverted for the construction of passage. He added that post completion of the subway, the park’s glory would be restored.
