Keeping the deaths of birds in Nagpur Regional Hatchery in mind, the district administration has extended the Bird Flu infected area from 1 km radius to the area within a radius of 3 km from the Hatchery in Seminary Hills on Tuesday.
The Health Department also took the swab samples of 87 workers of the Hatchery and sent for testing. Bird Flu was detected in Nagpur’s hatchery on March 8. After detecting the cases, the administration declared 1 km radius as infected with Bird Flu. The Health Department immediately swung into action and thousands of birds and eggs were destroyed in the Hatchery. Health check-ups of the employees are also being carried out.

The authorities have appealed to the citizens not to panic, and a warning period of 21 days was declared. People in the region have been advised not to consume eggs and chicken for 21 days as a preventive measure. The Public Health Department along with the Veterinary Department started an investigation and survey in the region. The picture will be clear within the next four to five days after the reports from the laboratory are received. After the warning by the Health Department, citizens are avoiding consuming chicken and eggs.

To avoid the spread of Bird Flu among birds in the zoo, the Maharajbag Zoo management sprayed medicines in the bird and other wild animal enclosures. The Zoo Management is also taking other precautions to avoid any death of birds due to Bird Flu. More than 8,500 poultry birds, 16,700 eggs and 400 kg bird feed have been scientifically destroyed by the Rapid Response Team (RRT) after carcasses of recent moralities tested positive for Bird Flu at the Hatchery. According to doctors, the zoonotic disease is contagious but chances of infected humans passing it to others are rare as of now.
