Exports will give major boost to economy: DGFT

Emphasizing on improving India’s exports Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Director General, Directorate General of Foreign Trade, on Tuesday country’s many districts have the potential to take the export figures to a new level. Addressing virtually the participants in the mega event - ‘Niryat Mohatsava’ held here, he said that only 70 districts are contributing more than 80 per cent of country’s total exports. “There are more than 760 districts in the country and each of them can come forward and exports goods and services. It will give a major boost to the economy,” he said. Sarangi further said that the office of Director General of Foreign Trade is reaching out to various stakeholders and encouraging them to export products and services. Sarangi also highlighted that the share of exports in India’s GDP is 12-14 per cent which is far less than that of countries like Germany, South Korea and Vietnam.
 
“In Germany, the share of exports in GDP is 41-42 per cent while in South Korea it is 39 per cent and in Vietnam it is 91 per cent. If we can improve our exports, it will be good for the country,” he said. Apart from this, Sarangi spoke about various outreach programmes being implemented by the department. Earlier in his introductory remarks, Sraman Vasireddy, Additional DGFT and Development Commissioner MIHAN SEZ Nagpur, said ‘Niryat Mohatsava’ was held to mark the culmination of Export Hub Drive implemented in 49 districts covering the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh which was conducted from July 2023 to February 2024. Snehal Dhokey, Assistant DGFT, in her speech, elaborated on the steps initiated by the department to promote exports from the 49 districts in Central India.
 
“Despite of limited resources, we visited the entrepreneurs, farmers and various service providers and motivated them to export their goods and services,” she added. In addition to this, DGFT officials and representatives of various organisatons explained in detail the import and export procedures and schemes. The FPOs, industry associations, entrepreneurs, women SHGs, handicraft artisans and members of industrial organisatons attended the event. India Post, Bank of Maharashtra, Forest Department, Tourism Department, Vanamati, Agriculture Department, Hortculture Department, MAVIM, Department of Tribal Development Nagpur, Export Promotion Council- APEDA, and others were associated with event. Sonali Morai of DGFT Nagpur Team conducted the proceedings of the function while Gaurav Sahare of DGFT Nagpur Team proposed the formal vote of thanks.
