VIDARBHA made gallant fight back in the second innings but could not end on the right side in the Ranji Trophy final against Mumbai as the former champions claimed the title for 42nd time with a 169 runs win at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. Despite losing the title clash, Vidarbha coach Usman Ghani was proud of the players for showing courage against Mumbai. The coach put the blame on “one bad session” and some umpiring errors for Vidarbha’s loss but in the same breadth lauded the “fighters” who are second best in the country. “It was one bad session or say the first 40 minutes of the first day. We should have batted out that one hour,” said Ghani after the Ranji final which Vidarbha lost to Mumbai by 169 runs on Friday at Wankhede Stadium.

Vidarbha played brilliantly in the entire tournament but for the final. “I am really proud of the entire team. They all are fighters and know how to play big matches. Their performance improves with each game. Today, Akshay Wadkar and Dubey really batted well in the morning. Even yesterday (fourth day) Karun Nair was batting well. I think there were some umpiring errors, not only in this match but in others matches as well,” said Ghani. The Vidarbha coach also felt that luck was not in his team’s favour. “I think the luck was also not in our favour. There were many DRS calls which went against us. But these are all part and parcel of the game.” Vidarbha premier spinner Aditya Sarvate could not take the field due to injury and Ghani felt that his absence too hampered team’s progress.

“Yes, we missed Sarvate. He is a champion bowler and also bats well. Had he been there and could have bowled the result could have been different. We played with 10 men,” stated Ghani. Ghani lauded the Vidarbha set-up and all age group teams for making knock-outs of all BCCI organised tournaments. “All our age group teams made it to the knock-outs. It’s a big achievement. “Vidarbha cricket is in safe hands and we are moving in the right direction. “We are making winning a habit now one day we will bring most of the trophies home,” Ghani signed out.
